Residents of the Bronx and other parts of New York City often walk to get places. Sadly, some people end up in pedestrian accidents. There are several causes of these serious incidents.
Distracted drivers
Often, auto-pedestrian accidents occur because a driver is distracted and not paying attention to the road. When a driver is checking their cellphone, fiddling with their car’s controls or even engaged in conversation with a passenger, it can have serious consequences and a pedestrian can be struck.
Drunk driving
Drunk drivers are a danger to everyone on the road and especially to pedestrians. Drunk driving is a major cause of pedestrian accidents. Injuries stemming from those accidents can be serious and even life-threatening. If a driver is intoxicated, they’re more likely to travel too fast, which could lead to a hit and run with a pedestrian as a victim.
Pedestrian distraction
Drivers are not the only ones who can be distracted and cause a pedestrian accident. Sometimes, a pedestrian might be the one who’s distracted. If a pedestrian is paying attention to something else such as their phone and not watching cars, traffic signs or traffic signals, it can be disastrous.
Speeding or racing
Drivers who speed or race are a huge danger to pedestrians and everyone else. If such a vehicle is approaching an area populated with pedestrians, a serious accident can quickly occur and result in severe injuries and fatalities.
Pedestrians wearing dark clothing at night
If a pedestrian is wearing dark clothing and is out after dark, it makes them more difficult to see. A driver could accidentally hit a pedestrian in this situation. Pedestrians should wear reflective clothing or lighter colors when they’re going to be out after dark.
